http://welovefine.com/shop/80s-Fashion-Art/

The X-Women of the 1980s are back again in a t-shirt line inspired by Patrick Nagel! Okay, not the greatest artistic renderings, but cool nonetheless...

1988 - X-Men: Fall of the Mutants Omnibus

Finally got this massive 824-page omnibus and thought I'd share some pictures of it!

 Always loved that Alan Davis promo piece; great choice for a cover!

 Daredevil #252, one of my favorite of Ann Nocenti's run with John Romita Jr.

 Lots of extra material neatly dispersed through the book instead of all just at the end.

1982 - Michael Golden's cover to the X-Men Companion

Micheal Golden's cover to the X-Men Companion. 'Nuff said.

And the published version.
And here's the version that Mike Zeck inked himself.

1983 - Marvel Try-Out Book

Marvel Comics released The Marvel Try-Out Book as an oversized 11”x17” book (and rather expensive one at $12.95) meant to encourage young, undiscovered talent. The incentive was that the winners would be given work at Marvel Comics. The book outlined each role in the comic book creation process, from writer, penciler, inker, letterer, and colourist. It then allowed an opportunity for you to fill that role, for example, pre-penciled pages for you to ink and letter, or blank pages for you to pencil.

The Marvel Try-Out Book contest winners weren’t announced until 1986:

    * Plotter and scripter: Chuck Duffie
    * Penciler: Mark Bagley
    * Inker: Doug Hazlewood
    * Colorist: P. Jeanine Pasda
    * Letterer: Robin Riggs

As you may know, Mark Bagley is the now famous penciler on Ultimate Spider-Man. Inker Doug Hazlewood went on to join DC Comics as a regular inker for their Superman family of books. And Robin Riggs “graduated” from lettering and went on to a career as an inker.

From an interview with Comic Book Resources, Bagley stated:

I thought it was a gimmick…something Jim Shooter came up with, and I didn’t buy it. Luckily, Cliff Biggers, the guy who publishes Comic Shop News, was a friend of mine. He owned the comic book store that I went to at the time. He told me, “If you don’t do this, you’ll hate yourself.” So, he gave it to me. And, I won first place. That got me a trip to New York and a chance to meet all the editors. I went, and they threw me out of their offices. The last editor I saw on the last day I was there said, “Hey, I bet you’d like something to draw, wouldn’t you.” I said, “Yeah!” That was, I think, Mike Higgins who was editing the New Universe which was kind of winding down. He was desperate for people to work on it, and I was desperate for work. I did 4 or 5 jobs for him. After about a year and a half of doing it, I was able to quit my regular job and do comics full time. And, I’ve never looked back.

Cover to Back Issue #53

Had to share the beautiful Simonson Thor cover for the upcoming Back Issue #53. You'll have to wait until December to read my interview with Tom DeFalco, former Marvel Comics editor-in-chief, and Ron Frenz!

Marvel Comics - August 2011 solicitations - Fantastic Four omnibus

FANTASTIC FOUR BY JOHN BYRNE OMNIBUS VOL. 1 HC
Written by JOHN BYRNE, CHRIS CLAREMONT, MARV WOLFMAN, BILL MANTLO, STAN LEE & ROGER STERN
Penciled by JOHN BYRNE, MIKE ZECK, JACK KIRBY & RON WILSON

It was the world’s greatest comic magazine — again! Not since the days of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby had a creator so perfectly captured the intense mood, cosmic style and classic sense of adventure of Marvel’s First Family. Fresh off an earth-shattering and reputation-making run as penciler on UNCANNY X-MEN, John Byrne proved his writing talent was every bit the equal of his art as he pulled double-duty on FANTASTIC FOUR, launching Reed, Sue, Ben and Johnny into realms of imagination and wonder into which few creators before had dared to travel.

From the four corners of the globe to the farthest reaches of space to the deepest depths of the Negative Zone, the FF face off against foes old and new — including the Dr. Doom, Galactus and Annihilus! Plus: The FF aid the Inhumans, bid farewell to the Baxter Building, don new costumes and celebrate their 20th anniversary in style as Byrne reminds us all there’s a family at the heart of this team of adventurers!

Collecting MARVEL TEAM-UP (1972) #61-62; MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #50; FANTASTIC FOUR (1961) #215-218, #220-221, #232-262 and ANNUAL #17; PETER PARKER, THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN (1976) #42; AVENGERS (1963) #233; THING (1983) #2; and ALPHA FLIGHT (1983) #4.

1984 - Mazzucchelli's pencils for Daredevil #208

Daredevil #208, “The Deadliest Night Of My Life” still stands as one of my favorite Daredevil issues. Written by Harlan Ellison and Arthur Byron Cover and drawn by David Mazzucchelli and Danny Bulanadi.

The issue features the still-developing talents of David Mazzucchelli and I always felt that his art was being held back by Bulanadi’s heavy inks. Well, here are Mazzucchelli’s penciled art from that issue.

I found these beautiful images at Attack at Don! Blog (http://dchudson.blogspot.com).

1987 - Jack Kirby and Frank Miller's Spider-Man

Grabbed from a book called "Jack Kirby's Heroes and Villains" published by Greg Theakston in 1987. It was a reproduction of a 129-page sketchbook that Jack Kirby did as a gift for his wife Roz in the 1970s.

This image was from the "Black Magic Edition" where they several 1980s artists inked Kirby's pencilled art. If anyone else has any other scans, let me know!

1981-83 - Frank Miller and John Romita Jr. combined sketch

Snagged from Romitaman’s art gallery:

“Check out this AMAZING pencil and ink drawing of Spider-Man and Hobgoblin, which were each drawn on 2 separate 11 by 14 inch art boards! Frank Miller fully penciled the Spiderman figure at the San Diego Comic Con in 1981. John Beatty who was inking Mike Zeck on his famous Captain America run (and later on Marvel Secret Wars) did the inks on the Miller pencils in 1982. In 1983 at the Miami Comic Con, John Romita Jr. penciled and inked this Hobgoblin figure at the EXACT same time he drew the VERY FIRST HOBGOBLIN appearance in Amazing Spider-man #238! John Romita Jr. then tied both 11 by 14 inch pieces together by adding the pumpkin bomb that goes into the Miller Spider-man drawing to give the effect of it being 1 big piece.”

1982 - Whatever to the Shooter/Weiss Sub-Mariner miniseries?

"Sub-Mariner - miniseries written by Shooter and drawn by Alan Weiss is semi-completed and back on schedule." (Amazing Heroes #16, 1982)

Unfortunately, I don't know what happened to this limited series. I posted a question on Jim's blog, maybe I'll get an answer...

I grabbed these images from Attack at Don! Blog. A great blog you should check out.
(http://dchudson.blogspot.com/2007/06/unseen-alan-weiss.html). This artwork was produced after his short stint on The Might Avengers in 1982.
