1984 - Alpha Flight #12

The original printed version of that great two-page spread from Alpha Flight #12.

And the digitally recoloured version.

  1. Call me old fashioned, but I actually prefer the old version. Something about the grainy quality of the newspaper print that really adds to the feel of the art, which the digitized polished to perfection version sadly lacks.

  2. I think the biggest difference is that the older art has more dimension, while the re-colored version seems "flatter." The re-color also looks a little "cartoonier," in my opinion. But on the other hand, the re-color does soften the inks, which I personally think are a little heavy in the newsprint version. I don't think I would've thought of them as particularly heavy inks if I didn't see the two next to one another, but when I compare them (especially, for example, the inks on Guardian's chest or around Sasquatch), it's noticeable how much the inks fade and the colors come through. Also, I'm a little weirded out by the coloring on Sasquatch. In the newsprint version, is the page discolored? Or is he actually being drawn with three different colors (his right side being redder, and his left side more orange)? I ask because I actually like that look better than the sort of uniform coloring of the re-color... but on the other hand, it kind of looks like it might just be discoloration on the actual page. Huh.

  3. It could be the scan, or colors bleeding through the page, but I like the subtle color changes in the floor and wall on the older version.

  4. Give me the original color version any day. Some of the recolours turn my stomach. That ones only mild.
