1985 - Original art from New Mutant Special Edition and X-Men Annual #9

The Asgardian Wars from the summer of 1985 will always hold a special place in my heart. It was an amazing coming of age story for the New Mutants. Claremont and Art Adams were at the top of their games...

  1. I think the Adams annuals were the first comics I owned that felt really special, like pieces of art that were worth owning & looking after and pretty much changed my casual collecting habits to something a bit more serious...
Hated that "massive chin" phase he went through around the start of the 90s though (coincidentally about the time I stopped collecting)!

  2. Yes these were very special issues. Must have been a turning point for a lot of us children of the 80s!

  3. Thanks Marcelo. I was 14 during the summer of 1985 and remember the long wait until X-Men Annual #9. Must have read that Special Edition 50 times!

  4. This is easily the best looking comic book that I collected back in the 80's. Simply gorgeous!

  5. Hey Peder, felt the same way. Still feel like it deserves a modern recolouring as a lot of the detailed background work by Adams was washed over in background colours...

  6. Back then as comic book collecting kid, Art Adams work on the New Mutants and X-Men annuals as well as the covers for "Heroes for Hope" and Classic X-men had me wishing he would be the regular X-Men artist (no offense John Romita Jr but after Byrne, Cockrum and Paul Smith...Romita didnt quite live up to them in my opinion). I later understood how an artist as detailed would have problems on a monthly book.

  7. Hey Matt, yeah, Paul Smith was an amazing artist and was the one I really felt captured the X-Men, even a bit better than Byrne!

  8. All great covers, there was also the "Classic X-Men#1" cover which I got signed by the creators in a London comic store when it first came out!
