TSR's D&D Adventure Ads
These one-page mini-comics ran as ads in the early 1980s. All but the first one were drawn by Bill Willingham, who would go on to create Comico's Elementals and who is currently writing DC's Fables.
After you posted Attack of the Mutants the other day, I got hit with nostalgia hard! But that made me remember these D&D ads which I absolutely loved... and lo & behold, you post 'em for me. Thanks Jason!
I love this post! I just recently bought a huge stack of Rom Spacknight issues and these were such a blast to see. I only ever remember seeing two of the ads in my collection. It's nice to be able see them all in order.
I always loved Willingham's art so much in that era. Elementals was one of my first comic book shop purchases. Also his work with Jeff Dee on the Villains and Vigilantes RPG is such an iconic part of my head cannon.
Willingham drew those? How did you find that out? I really love Fables. One of my favourite books.
ReplyDeleteHey Slentz, you can see Willingham's distinctive signature in the fourth image, panel 6.

ReplyDeleteHey Jeff, you're more that welcome!
ReplyDeleteI loved these. I had always wished that there were more of them. I could have read a whole comic of them. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYou can see the early Michael Golden influence in Willingham's art for these ads.
ReplyDeleteI still have a load of those Willingham created Monster Cards. Some cool stuff. LOVE Fables (and the FIRST Elementals book)
ReplyDeleteAll but the first TWO. The second installment is by Roslof, I believe.
