Hey David, The X-Men had been captured by Magneto and they managed to escape and provide a warm welcome for him. They battled it out inside of a volcano. Phoenix escaped with Beast, but they believe the others had died. However, the others had actually found a passage way to the Savage Land. Great issue. And a great portrayal of Magneto.
My 1st issue of X-Men was # 116 (with the cover of Colossus being burned at the stake), but THIS was the issue that I bought next (one of my first back-issue buys) and I was AMAZED at the artwork and the story grabbed me by the &@!!$ and never let go!
I was then-and-there an X-Men fan and a John Byrne enthusiast! (The X-Men would eventually leave me weary, during the Marc Silvestri and Whilce Portacio era. Jim Lee would lure me back for awhile, but then Claremont left and it was never the same.)
But THIS issue (and the entire "arc")...A MASTERPIECE!
My intro to Byrne came through the Dark Phoenix Saga TPB, the 1984 edition with the cover by Bill Sienkiewicz. Not a bad way to start off on John Byrne's work!
I really love your blog by the way, which I discovered a few months ago, and I'm now in the process of reading the old entries. Your blog, along with the slew of recent superhero movies, and a comic book shop moving sale, got me back into comics after a break of nearly 20 years!
I remember seeing this issue at my local 7-11 and instead bought an unremarkable issue of Charlton's The Six Million Dollar Man. Months later, I bought issue #116 (instead of an X-Men reprint in Amazing Adventures) and was hooked for the next 10 years or so. --rd
