1980 - Internal Marvel Memo about that year's calendar

  1. I might need to add this as an addendum to the 1981 calendar post on my blog (with credit to you and the Byrne forum for digging it up).

Since the memo is dated MARCH 1980, I can only assume it is referring to the following year's calendar (even though the memo itself does say "1980 calendar", I'd imagine they typed the wrong year by accident.

I'd love to peel back the digital ink to see the blacked out names.

  2. Just a thought:
I guess the project didn't do as well as needed, since the 1981 calendar was the LAST one in the series for awhile.

  3. Interesting that 33 years later everyone on that list is still working. Terry Austin not so much although he always did quality inking some I'm not sure why. I wonder who the third artist that was blacked out was?

  4. Here's a link to the 1979-81 Marvel Calendars with images.

I know the 1981 Hulk is definitely Golden, the Iron Man looks like Layton, Miller Daredevil and the Avengers Perez.

  6. Not sure I ever understand why names had to be blacked out in the first place? Isn't this a rather complimentary list? Where's the harm in making the names transparent?

The names were originally just crossed out in pen by an editor, (maybe the artists in question qwere too busy on other projects, or the editor thought they were not right for the project) but when John Byrne posted it to his site, he more completely blacked them out to avoid the artist's being embarrassed by being snubbed by editorial.
