1985 - Anatomy of a cover - Iron Man #200

A commission based on Iron Man #200

The same piece as above but with the title and captions.

Another commissioned version by Bob Layton.

And lastly, the published version:

  1. I like Layton's commissioned cover a lot--but perhaps the published cover displays Iron Man's new armor to fuller effect. (I can't imagine any other reason why Iron Man would fight the Iron-Monger with his back turned to him!)

  2. Finally met Layton last weekend at a con we both exhibited at. It was interesting to see how many "recreations" of covers he had in his original art for sale.

  3. I remember reading that series and the hype building for the new armor Stark was working on (and to debut in that #200 issue) only to have that red/white armor show up a few weeks early in West Coast Avengers #1 instead.

  4. Hey guys, thanks for the comments.

Comicsfan, the only reason I could think was that the Iron Monger snuck up on him.

PJ, that's cool, thanks for sharing.

Matt P., it was a great build up and I always loved his Silver Centurion Armor, one of the big reasons I liked the WCA.
