To answer your questions: Yes, this is Jean Grey — as in, the Jean Grey who’s been absent from Marvel Comics ever since dying for a second time back in the mid-’00s. And yes, she is modeling her vintage blue-and-yellow X-Men outfit from her Marvel Girl days. Does this mean that the fan-favorite character is finally returning? We can only confirm that her presence in the Marvel Universe will not be imaginary. This will not be part of the Ultimate line-up. She will not be a zombie hologram, like Shard on X-Factor. What could this all mean? Check back tomorrow, when all the secrets will be revealed. (Or some of them, anyhow.)
"It's not hype when we say that AvX is the culmination of a lot of stories we've done over the last several years," said Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso in the article. "Characters are redeemed or not. Characters are changed. The X-Men and the Avengers are both repositioned for the future. What better time to shake things up?"
I agree, I feel that Marvel is running out of ideas I wish someone would just start creating new characters for marvel to make them fresh again.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly. It's time to retire some of their characters and move in a fresh new direction. I keep hearing great things about Avengers Academy with Pym leading a new team of young heroes.
ReplyDeleteAs you said, it would be interesting if Scott left Emma (big iF, though), since I think Emma has a lot of insecurity issues (covered up with her "high self-esteem" mask). Would she fall down hard after something like that?
ReplyDeleteI bought the first issue, but i just couldnt get into it. I liked the look of the new characters especially the guy that looks like a red skeleton.(cant remember his name). But i have just become so disillusioned with marvel nowadays. The only title i reguaraly get from them is Venom. The rest of my titles are The walking dead from image and Adventure time from boom studios. The best comics from marvel are the 60s 70s 80s and the 90s. Once 2000 came around they started to suck.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of many reasons why I don't buy current comics. Jean's deaths have cheapened her and cheapened the (still fantastic) Dark Phoenix saga. And to be brutally honest, she was never my favorite X-person to begin with.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I'm concerned, Jean's dead, same goes for Gwen Stacy,Bucky and (especially) Norman Osbourn.
Well, I saw this today. Looks like a lot is changing. I'm not clear on whether or not this is taking place in 616, or a different universe, though:

Thanks David. I've added the picture to this blog post. Interesting take on Cyclops.
ReplyDeleteI'd become a bit of a marvel zombie at the time of Jean's first resurrection and having missed her swan(?) song it didn't bother me...Her re-introduction was brilliantly handled by "man-of-moment" Byrne and I thought the new X-Factor comic was great and anyhow weren't Phoenix's supposed to be re-born?!
ReplyDeleteHer latest resurrection from Morrison's superb run also doesn't bother me because I've lost interest in Marvel...again! I didn't read Marvel in the 90's until Quesada at the editorial helm got me back on board but this decade seems to be very poor creatively.
-Dean.
Hey Dean, totally agree that Quesada has fumbled the ball this past decade. Personally for me it was undoing Spidey's marriage and selectively undoing his history that got me to drop the book after collecting since 1983!
ReplyDeleteI didn't mind the x-factor storyline because it was well told, but it negated all the great work claremont did with rachel Summers. Marvel need to do what they did in the 70's and create new heroes like Warlock and Luke Cage etc. Even the success of deadpool should tell them something. I think it's disnney pulling the strings looking for another quick sale. To hell with quality. And yeah, Quesada really messed up and he let bendis do too much.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'm alone on this, but I'm not actually totally upset about this. First of all, there's an article on Marvel.com today ( http://marvel.com/news/story/19008/marvel_now ) about the project. And you know what? It's not a bad idea. I mean, there are a lot of people who have dropped a lot of time and money on the Marvel U, so you can't just blow it up and start over (a la DC, who lost some loyal readers). But you also can't keep going with the status quo, and not gain any new readership - because new readers equals big money (speaking of DC, see what's happened to sales figures since the New 52 came out).
ReplyDeleteThe thing I'm least sure of is the whole original-X-men-coming-to-the-present idea. That's odd. But hey - Jean Grey is one of the greatest characters of the Marvel U, in my opinion. Definitely an awesomely strong female presence. So I think it would be a ton of fun to have her back. Anyway, that's all I've got for now. I sure hope this goes well, though.
