1986 - Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man #132

From Bob McLeod's Facebook page:

1986 Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man #132 part 6 page 12 Mike Zeck breakdown pencils, Script by J.M. DeMatteis, lettering by Rick Parker.
By the final issue in the Kraven series, I had inked a lot of dark sewers, and a lot of hairy Vermins. It's funny to me that as bare as Mike's pencils were, he knew exactly what I was going to do with them.

I love the textures that McLeod added to the walls of the sewers. Zeck's pencils indeed seemed very bare, more like breakdowns.

  1. Amazing. Seems like they had a pretty good artist relationship -- and obviously, a lot of trust. What's even more amazing about those issues is that despite the loose pencils of Zeck, his style never got overrun by McLeod's.

  2. As much as I like Zeck, I've never seen his pencils look anywhere near as good as they did in Kraven's Last Hunt. Now I see why! McLeod is a godsend.

  3. Is it just me, or does Spidey look noticably different between the pencils and the inked page, in that the eyes on his costume are much larger, almost McFarlanesque, in the inked page, but Zeck's pencils show a figure much more like how he usually depicted Spider-Man in the black costume?

  4. Hey Harry, I think you're right. His eyes are must larger and actually a different shape than Zeck's pencils.
