Details on the Fantastic Four by John Byrne Omnibus - revisited with issue contents

From amazon.ca:

Fantastic Four by John Byrne Omnibus - Volume 1
John Byrne (Author), Chris Claremont (Author), Marv Wolfman (Author), Bill Mantlo (Author), Stan Lee (Author), Roger Stern (Author), Mike Zeck (Illustrator), Ron Wilson (Illustrator)

"Not since the days of Lee and Kirby had a creator so perfectly captured the intense mood, cosmic style and classic sense of adventure of Marvel's First Family. Fresh off an earthshattering run as penciler on Uncanny X-Men, John Byrne proved his writing talent was every bit the equal of his art as he pulled double-duty on Fantastic Four, launching them into realms of imagination and wonder into which few creators before had dared to travel. From the four corners of the globe to the farthest reaches of space to the deepest depths of the Negative Zone, the FF face off against foes old and new - including the Dr. Doom, Galactus and Annihilus!"

Hardcover, 1084 pages, November 16, 2011

1,084 pages (assuming a 22-page comic book) is about 49 issues. There were a few double-sized issues in Byrne's early run, so probably about 46 issues in the massive volume.

Grabbed from a thread on the Jinxworld forum, looks like it'll be reprinting the following issues:

  • Marvel Team Up #61-62
  • Marvel Two In One #50
  • Fantastic Four #215-218, 220-221, 232-262, Annual #17
  • Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-man #42
  • Avengers #233
  • Thing #2
  • Alpha Flight #4

  1. Definitely a run worthy of being collected this way! If I didn't already own the Marvel Visionary TPB of these it would be on my per-order list. With this being collected its only a matter of time before peter Davids Hulk Run gets the Same treatment

  2. Notice all the other creators listed, though. Sounds like it must include some tie-ins from other books as well.

  3. Hey Daniel, definitely looking forward to a similar treatment for David's run on the Hulk.

Hey Pj, agreed. Probably the annuals...

  4. A classic!
If only I had the money...

  5. Yeah, I completed a run a few years ago, but may get this for the better printing and colors. After the announcement of the Simonson Thor Omnibus, I figured this was the next major run to get this treatment and well worth it.

  6. This is exciting news! Byrne's FF run matches Simonson's Thor as the best of the 80s Marvel. That is going to be one Monster of a book! Will that include the entire run?

  7. Hey Stephen, I don't think it'll include the entire run. The page count, assuming they start with FF#232, should get us to around FF #277 or #278. Leaving of course, enough material for a second massive volume!

  8. Looking back on my Gitcorp "44 Years of the Fantastic Four," it appears Byrne's run as writer/artist lasted from issue 232 to 293, for 61 issues. So maybe they do 30 issues in one volume, with a lot of bonus material (obviously there are some crossovers or Annuals involved), then another 30 in volume two? Incidentally, I don't care as much for Byrne's run after She-Hulk joined, and especially after Byrne quit inking his own art ... Maybe I'll skip Volume 2.

  9. Cant wait - Fantastic Four 236 "Terror in a tiny town" is a landmark comic IMHO.

The Omnibus Editions are superb and getting better - as evidenced by the recent Thor Simonson book.

Oh and Jason - recently discovered the blog - its my favourite era of comics - thank you so much.

  10. Remember, too, that Byrne penciled the book for a few issues before his run as writer/artist in #232, so I assume this first volume features those, as well.

I must say, Marvel Two-in-One #50 is the book that I have the most reprints of in my collection -- I think it's been collected and reprinted half a dozen times (at least)! Now I'll have it again.

  11. Oops, should have looked at the official contents -- of course it's reprinting those earlier issues.

  12. This is going to be a Christmas gift to myself! Best run by an artist/writer ever, period.

PS: Will kill my cousin for stealing my Byrne Negative Zone issues.
