Hey Marcelo: Whatever happened to Tony Salmons?

Tony Salmons saw the highlight of his comic book career in the mid-1980s, making a name for himself on Dakota North, Dr. Strange, GI Joe, Marvel Fanfare, and Savage Sword Of Conan. After that, he wasn’t very prolific bouncing around Dark Horse Comics, First Comics, and DC where he enjoyed a bit of a resurgence. He was also a storyboard artist for one episode of Batman: The Animated Series.

I recall not being into his art back in the 1980s and his art certainly is an acquired taste. Even today, some of his sketch work is hit or miss.

Unfortunately, his website, http://www.tonysalmons.net/, remains unfinished and a lot of his art can be found online with a google search.

Hope that answers your question!

  1. Cheers Jason!! It's funny, I was hot and cold on his art in the 80's..now I wish there was a LOT more of it.. it's even a little Paul Pope-ish!
Thanks again for your help and Make Mine Marvel 1980s!!

  2. For those of you that miss Tony Salmons and Dakota North, you're sure to enjoy the mock covers that Gerry Turnbull created based on the art for the paper-doll pin-up by artist from Marvel Age Annual #2. http://bit.ly/rD5OSb
