Check out the penciled version of Mike Zeck's cover to Secret Wars #1. Note the extra characters that were removed in the final product: Thor, Mr. Fantastic, Shadowcat, Colossus, and Cannonball.

  1. This is fantastic! I love Mike Zeck's work and its cool to see the New Mutants in the original.

We used to get the UK versions of Secret Wars here and they used that full image except for Cannonball - Colossus was in his place. Why the difference between that version and the UK I'm not sure, but there is a colour version of issue one's poster at http://itsadansworld.blogspot.com/2010/08/thor-and-mr-fantastic-originally-in.html

  6. I love all things 80s and the Secret Wars maxi series is one of the many projects that also made it a great decade for comics. Mike Zeck's work was awesome and visually dynamic. i can see why they would leave out cannon ball since he wasn't part of the "good guy" team but it's too bad they didn't leave Mr. Fantastic and THOR on the cover. this cover over the years has become somewhat iconic and used for Marvel merchandising so it's a shame they did leave in what i thought were two essential characters. also that Mike Golden poster was a good pick for your feature art on this blog. it's very symbolic of the 80s and in general Mike Golden is one of the best comic book artists ever. nice blog, i found it through Dan's site.

  7. In this cover I find that Professor-X and, perhaps, Magneto are missing.
